1. I buy amazing suede platforms and love them. 2. I wear the amazing suede platforms out for the first time and hurt my leg. 3,4,5,6 I lie in bed for three days hoping for my foot to heal, I go to A&E and find out I have fractured my 5th metatansel and get a cast for 3 days... I'm stuck at home and then I get a roboboot that I have to wear with crutches for 4 weeks... 4 WEEKS!!!! Time goes by so slowly... I can't wait to wear my amazing suede platforms again...

Today was terrible. Trying to serve customers and hiding the anger and tears at the same time. /Today reminded me of the time I was 12 and a posh girl in my school asked me if my best friends house was as small as my house and I said: "its about the same time but there house was build 30 years before ours and it has a upstairs so its hard to say." /The posh girl (these days my good friend) told my best friend (still a good friend aswell) that I had called her house "a cave and dirty." My best friend didn't talk to me for 6 months and everyone from my class believed what she had heard and turned against me and I was alone. /No one believed me and everytime I even tried to explain I was just called a liar. I hated going to school, waking up every day was a nightmare. /Let me remind you: I was 12, children are children. I got a lot of good out of that time: new friends... and my old ones in the end but I promised myself if anything like that were to happen ever again I would know that someone who is a true friend and knows me, knows what I'm like and knows how I charise my friendships and put my friends before anything else. Or atleast listens to me. /There are not many people that know this. Only last summer, whilst playing a stupid game on a friend summer cottage I was chosen "the most likely to leave a friend in trouble." I think that was the last time I cried for over a hour. That could have been the most hurtful thing ever said to me./I have a lot of friends but only a handful of people truly know me. I don't want to be between people that bad mouth each other and blame it on me. Thats why I don't like to get too involved. Back at home I use to bounce from different groups of friends and also enjoying just being on my own. I don't want to please everybody but I do have a good heart and value my friendships. Right now I just want to be alone, not for 6 months, not because I'm forced to but because the last time I was this hurt was when I was 12./

Me on Friday night and me right now at 7am on a Monday morning... On Friday I had more make-up than usual, added some contrast to the photograph and now I'm super sick and feeling terrible... Life is too stressfull right now... a relative passed away yesterday and this made me even more frazzled. I have to keep on going... for the first time in ages I started to read the bible...it just felt like the most comforting thing to do and reminded me about when I was 14 and wanted answers to big questions in life. I believe that the camera is a medium of light, that one actually paints with light. In using the spotlights with reflecting lights, I could control the quality of the forms revealed to build a composition. Photography, to my mind, is not a fine art. It is splendid for recording a period of time, but it has definite limitations, and the photographer certainly hasn’t the freedom of the painter. One can work with taste and emotion and create an exciting arrangement of significant form, a meaningful photograph, but a painter has the advantage of putting something in the picture that isn’t there or taking something out that is there. GR: Thanks for the interview Aya, what are you up to right now?
AB: I graduated from High School in June and moved to London in September to study photography. Right now I'm back In Helsinki for Christmas to meet friends and family.

GR: Your blog’s very inspirational, you have such an eye for art and detail –what’s the inspiration behind it?
AB: I've always loved everything visual. I've experimented with my style as well. I use to paint and draw but I feel photography is the way I can best express myself. Sounds really cliché but its true. I actually started keeping my first blog in March 2008 when I had my mind wrapped around relationship issues and wanted to use my energy on something nicer. I also felt I wanted to share my photographs and opinions with other people. My blog started out as a fashion blog but these days its more like my visual diary..

GR: Why did you choose to write in your blog in English?
AB: I have always spoken English with my Dad but its has never been as strong as my Finnish. I attended a bilingual class for nine years -and when I went to an entirely Finnish school my English really deteriorated. I also feel that because my blog is not so much tied in place and time everyone should be able to read the little writing I do.

GR: Fashion or Art, –which has the biggest influence on your ‘day-to-day’ life?
AB: I think fashion and art walk hand in hand. This is why I love fashion photography because so often, -it combines the two.

GR: I love your style –how would you describe your look and what are you wearing right now?
AB: Oh! I love second-hand pieces with high street brands and generally what I can afford. I like simple outfits and love nail polish and lipstick as a detail. Currently I've been only wearing black, with a bit of red and white. Right now I'm wearing a black dress with black velvet leggins.

GR: You’re based in Helsinki, Finland –name your favourite hotspots for the following –and tell us why they hit the mark:
AB: Helsinki. I have a love hate relationship with this town. I'm not sure if everyplace in the following list is exactly a hotspot but:

GR: For the latest fashions:
AB: For the latest fashions: Ovvn shop clothes for Finnish designers, some amazing stuff. Monki an Weekday are Swedish stores always have something nice and interesting.

GR: For the best food:
AB: For the best food: Cafe Bar 9 and Antiokia Atabar! Both places have the best prices for good food in town. Bar 9 is more chill and Antioka Bar is a Turkish restaurant with amazing food. Both places have a good service and atmosphere and I keep going back.

GR: For the best shoes:
AB: I usually buy shoes online and abroad. Check out Minna Parikka!

GR: For the hottest make-up:
AB: I buy Mac make-ups from department store Stockmann in the heart of the city. Good quality pays off.

GR: For the best girl’s night out:
AB: I don't really have girls nights out. I just [chill] with my friends -but in general, I'm usually stuck hanging out in Siltanen and Nolla... comfortable ”stylish” places, -there’s always someone you know and you can get food from the kitchen. If you want to go dancing on a Friday or Saturday night, -I would recommend to go to Yk, Tavastia or Kuudes Linja. If you want to go and see a gig check out what’s on in Liberte, Nosturi and Tavastia

GR: Handbags or Shoes?
AB: SHOES. I don't really care for bags. Usually I'll just stuff my things in a worn out tote bag.

GR: Savoury or sweet?
AB: Savoury! I'll have cake or skittles every now and then but prefer the taste of kenkey, lemon etc.

The ‘Next Big Thing’ is?
AB: Red hair Hmm... In fashion I think we will see lots of monochrome outfits, simple and graphic cuts and 80's rock band inspired stuff.

GR: Aya, you are of Ghanaian and Finnish heritage –can you tell us how this has shaped –and made you the person you are today?
AB: My Mum is Finnish and my Dad is Ghanaian. I was given Ghanaian names (Aya Afowa Efua). In my childhood always lived with both parents and there is quite a big Ghanaian community in Finland. I've been to Ghana quite a few times and I have family living over there. My Dad has thought me stuff about Ghana through every day life and I do believe it important to understand where you come from. I think having parents from two different cultures makes me extremely lucky; Not only language wise but I feel I have had a broader understanding of the world from a younger age.

GR: How easy is it to be a person of mixed heritage in Helsinki, Finland?
AB: Sometimes people ask you where you're from and sometimes I get served in English but otherwise its pretty normal. There has been some weird situations because of the fact that most mixed raced girls here feel comfortable relating to the hip hop culture. As a teenager I was more into the rock and punk scene. When I went to see Finnish artists like Hanoi Rocks or Pelle Miljoona it occurred to me that I was the only ”dark face” but it never bothered me because at the same time this scene was so much more accepting and liberal. Now in London its (of course) different and I love that I can just blend in but I find it funny when people find out I'm Finnish Ghanaian and they say ”how exotic”. I know a million girls just like me in Finland!

GR: Have you been to Ghana before –if not do you have plans to go?
AB: Yes I have been there 4 times now. I really want to go back as soon as I've got money for flights and time!

GR: What’s next for Aya Brace?
AB: Getting more grounded in London (that’s definitely where I want to stay), continuing my studies, working on my photography in order to become a successful photographer sooner or later and last but not least -I need to learn how to make fufu and groundnut soup!

I went to the Royal Opera house to see Sylvia -> my flat mates dad has a spare ticket and gave it to me, so happy! Only disappointing fact is that I started to feel so ill I had leave in the middle of the performance.
I really have to start dancing again, miss it so much.

A project for uni I mentioned earlier... with the idea of making photo montages. Well I ended up doing 6 collges for the final pieces.

I don't like to be political with my work but in these pieces I discuss (a little bit) the way the media potrays women and our needs. Is it too black and white? Does my generation even want to rebel, is being overly superficial rebellion against our parents? Do we take anything seriously? Are we intouch with the rest of the world?

Its been good and its been not as good. Mostly good but settling down takes its time. Uni takes up most of my time and I feel everything is built around it in my life right now. On my birthday on Monday I got homesick for the first time.. or I didn't really miss Helsinki but I missed my friends because most of my new friends here were working and nothing was going on. Ermmm... I thought about not even publishing this picture but then again whatever pieces of my hipster image I might have had left were flushed down the toilet already last night (anyways). Still haven't decided if last night was insane in a good or bad way. Woke up in the morning and went to have lunch with Kiasma people and had a fun photoshoot so yea.. its all good and especially because like around 50 of our closest friends where there to make fools of themselves with us...

I've been going full speed. So fast I've forgot most of it. But I do remember it being fun. I remember it involving lots of laughter, hugs and kisses. I remember being sure of missing it all.. atleast a little bit. Moving involves more things to sort out I could have ever imagined but its all finally coming together.

No wonder some people never leave their house when there is so much good-bad tv to watch.
Programmes such as "My holiday hostage hell", "True Story: I have a Parent in Prison", or my personal favorite "LIttle People, Big World". Uuh its just too fascinating.

I've been looking at different photographers webpages for the entire night and must say I've seen good ones but I've also come across cluttered horrendous ones.

In a years time I could start putting up one for myself aswell. By then I should have matured , photography wise, and have enough good material to display.

Argh! Every so often I come back to these thoughts though.

So I spent a weekend at Inari's summer cottage. When it was build the houses beside where not there. Now you come out of the woods onto the shore and see all these buildings. Its kinda cool, two worlds combined. Anywho: me and the girls had a little phtooshoot whilst the guys where .... well.... getting drunk to be honest. More pictures in flickr .

BORED WITH A BANANA

I found myself taking pictures of myself and a banana after a day of work and got worried of the state of my mind and inspiration so I decided to have a free weekend for like the first time this summer. I made up all these plans and ended up throwing heads and tails in order to make up my mind. So... I'll be going to a summer cottage with a bunch of my best friends. I hate being on a summer cottage but what I don't hate are my friends and thank god that place is a 30 minute drive away + it has proper toilet fascilities (thats all I need to stay happy).

Work, making every possible kind of salad, learning how to make the perfect rasberry mojito, making more salads, wearing my hair curly in the privacy of my house and working some more.

Just walking around for 10h in Tallin and fullfilling every food/drink involved craving I've had his summer (sushi with champagne, savignon blanc with tapas, mojitos, milkshake, a well made cappuchino) and then there was time to people watch and chat without any hurry. Eric came to the harbour to assist us carry our stuff. 80% if the drinks were Kim's, 'I just couldn't bring myself to buy alcohol with all my money, then we ended up going for a naked swim on the beach from my house with a scooter and a bikeand postive energy was flowing all the way. 1 day felt like a 5 day holiday. Back to working 6 days per week, I go.
